Databases OPI

Ever since it was established in 1990 the Information Processing Centre has been engaged in creating and maintenance of databases. As the scope of accumulated information was increasing so was the number of thematically separate databases stored by the Information Processing Centre. Although differing in subject matter nearly all databases carried information on the state of Polish science and effects of conducted research projects. This resulted in frequent copying of stored data (for instance, a person being described in several different bases), occurrence of ambiguous data (description of a person's essential data differing in particular databases) and made it impossible to acquire an all-round information on a given object.
Therefore in 1998 a decision was taken that the Information Processing Centre would set up an integrated database "Science in Poland" with a view to joining all the databases owned by the Centre at the time. The goal of this venture was to store in one format various kinds of information relating to Polish science, and thereby ensuring more efficient and complex service for the users. Owing to the success of the concept a new database available since 1999 appears to be a unique one on nation-wide scale both with regard to the range and the amount of information offered.

At present the database "Science in Poland" comprises information on:

scientific and research and development institutions,
institutions and organizations supporting scientific research,
offices of state administration as well as other institutions and organizations responsible for the directions and realization of the scientific policy of the State,
scientific societies, associations and scientific and professional corporations,
foundations acting in the sphere of science,
research projects, research and development works and scientific expertise,
completed doctoral and qualifying dissertations,
scientists of Polish origin living and working outside the country,
information on persons possessing at least the academic degree of a doctor (or its equivalent as in the field ofartistic activities) or qualifications of the first degree.

The range of data relating to specific objects has been presented in descriptions found in successive parts of our service. The relative structure of the environment applied made it possible to mutually interlink the Information available in the base.

The database is continually updated.

Apart from the database "Science in Poland", our Centre has at its disposal the following other bases:

database "Scientific and Research Units" comprising information accumulated for the Ministry of Scientific Research and Information Technology by means of the "Unit Questionnaire".
database "Conferences, Fairs, Expositions " comprising information on national and international events organized by national scientific and research units,
reports "Research Projects financed by the Ministry of Scientific Research and Information Technology" relying on the database owned by the Ministry,
database POLSIGLE designed for various kinds of unconventional and hard-access documents defined in the West as grey literature,
database of final reports related to the realization of completed research projects (both own and supervisory ones) which is stored for the Ministry of Scientific Research and Information Technology,
database "Biotechnology in Poland" which comprises information accumulated under the Programme of Statistical Research on Public Statistics for the Ministry of Scientific Research and Information Technology.

At present our Centre has initiated work on developing a new database named "Bases of Knowledge on Polish Science" which embraces the database "Science in Poland", "Scientific and Research Units", the database of final reports on certain goal-orientated and ordered projects, as well as some databases which up to now have been elaborated by the State Committee for Scientific Research.
